More items from the wedding, which was THIS PAST SATURDAY! EEEE. It was so much fun and I still can't believe how smoothly everything ran. There wasn't a moment of it that wasn't perfect, and I had SUCH fun experiencing this thing I'd planned for so long. JOY!

Hey, sorry for this random message! I'm applying to Calarts, and I saw that you weren't accepted back in 2010. Your art was really good though! Like, really good!! It's just making me a little nervous. If you wouldn't mind explaining, why do you think you weren't accepted? I'd just like some piece of mind. It seems like I'm finding lots of acceptances for people whose talent is less than your own. If you'd rather answer on dA, my name is 80avatarfan80. Sorry again for intruding on your personal blog!
ReplyDeleteHey there, and no problem at all! I don't really know any better now than I did then what the reason for the rejection was, but I've come to believe it had to do with point-of-view and portfolio.
DeleteWhen I got my portfolio back from Calarts, there was actually a post-it note on one of the pages. It said, "Nice!", and the piece it was stuck to was by far my most exploratory life drawing. Now, I have no idea if other people get their books back with post-it notes stuck everywhere or none at all, but the fact that THAT was the piece they commented on said to me that that was the kind of work that interested them at entry.
From what I've seen of other people's portfolios who've successfully get into the school, the artists are really trying to explore what their point of view might be, toying with various mediums, trying to get to the heart of a life-drawing pose no matter how abstract, versus being overly concerned with realism. Some of what I submitted also was concept work, and I don't know if they were interested in that part of the process from an entrance portfolio.
Again, just guesses. haha. Part of me is still fairly horrified that I wasn't accepted there, hahaha, BUT we do our best with whatever roads we have to take. Thanks for all your kind words about my work, though, and best of luck to you!
